The year of 2023 promises some pretty big action for the gaming enthusiast, but I question if it can get any bigger than Warhammer 40K: Space Marine.
Both the reveal trailer and it’s subsequent gameplay spotlight did a lot to paint a picture of a conflict that is absolutely massive – and now a conversation with PC Gamer puts into perspective just how colossal it all is.
Creative Director Oliver Hollis-Leick clarifies that “Wars don’t take place in cities or countries, they take place on planets, solar systems, and even local groups of stars. So what we want is for the player to feel embedded in one of those great Warhammer 40K wars.”
The original Space Marine title did a great job of communicating a planetary conflict that always seemed to be just out of reach – the thunder of massive war machines and hordes seemed to be ever present, but never quite in your face. Space Marine II is going to amend this with a promise to have the player positively swarmed with targets.
“We have our own proprietary engine at Saber which allowed us to do things in World War Z that you couldn’t get from any other engine, things like 500 enemies on screen at the same time. Without compromising the graphics.”
And this all makes a great deal of sense from a lore perspective – given that Space Marine II has you dealing with the Tyranids, perhaps the most swarmy army that ever existed. Wading into a gnawing, slashing horde of insect monsters sounds all the more inviting when you imagine that they number in their hundreds.
