Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Drops A Developer Diary Video

See what goes into bringing a Space Marine to life

Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment have dropped a banger of a Developer Diary today for the hotly anticipated Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 – giving a properly hilarious look into the magic behind bringing a 8ft tall walking tank to life.

As entertaining as Space Marine 2 looks, there is something deeply tickling about seeing men in leotards pretend to be Space Marines:

Beyond the cinematic excellence of motion capture in …well, motion, there is also a generous dive into how important it was to get the whole thing right. Creative Director Oliver Hollis-Leick talks about how established the tabletop experience is, and how representing the visuals of that world boils down to a very hard mission for the art team. But they have definitely worked hard to meet the brief, because Space Marine 2 looks the business.

There is also talk of the gameplay experience needing to match the power fantasy of a superhuman killing machine standing against the ravening hordes of the Tyranids, but also the ruinous powers of Chaos.

They also have some amazing shots of the headquarters of Warhammer – a place called Warhammer World, in the United Kingdom – showing key members of the team actually looking at the epic displays that dwell there.

The big appeal of the video is that it seems to be drawing from a place of personal excitement from the team – there is no celebrity endorsement, or pop music soundtrack, just a big showcase of “How cool does this look? We really want it to be cool!” from all the people involved. I may just be overdosing on the sheer hype of the project, but it all feels so very sincere from the crew at Saber.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 launches on September 10, and with videos like this it looks to be shaping up to be something really special indeed.
