Nintendo has announced that the movie adaptation of Super Mario Bros. has been delayed until April 2023.
Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto took to the Nintendo of America’s Twitter account to announce that after consulting with those at the animation studio Illumination, it’s been decided to move the release date of the Super Mario Bros. movie to April 7 in North America and April 28 in Japan. The film was originally set to hit theatres on December 21, but we won’t be getting the moustachioed plumber on the big screen until next year now.
This is Miyamoto. After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America. My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait.

We haven’t been given any reason for the delay, but I’ll be the first to say on WellPlayed’s behalf that it will be worth the wait, if just for the sheer absurdity of it all. The adaptation will see Chris Pratt voice the main man himself, with Jack Black, Seth Rogan and Charlie Day voicing Bowser, Donkey Kong and Luigi respectively.
