The Persona And Yakuza Series Have Been Selling Incredibly Well

Kiryu doesn’t take no for an answer (respectfully)

SEGA has reported its financial earnings for the Fiscal Year of 2022 (ended March 2022) via SEGA Sammy — a holding company for the popular game publisher — and it details the success of numerous IPs, both internally developed and acquired. These unit sales also include downloads, not just physical units shipped.

For starters, the Persona series has sold quite well of late, especially with Persona 5 and its various editions/spinoffs totalling 7.22 million units sold worldwide, with 77% of those sales coming from overseas markets (a little over 5.5 million units). The series as a whole has sold approximately 15.5 million units, indicating the significance of Persona 5 in the series, with it attributing almost half of those series sales in and of itself.

Shin Megami Tensei, which had its first new release just last year after a 5-year drought since Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, has sold approximately 19.0 million units.

The Yakuza series, also known as Ryu ga Gotoku, has sold an impressive 19.8 million units since its debut back in 2005.

Unsurprisingly, Sonic the Hedgehog is still SEGA’s biggest IP, with a whopping 1.51 billion units and downloads since its 1991 debut. While the sales numbers for Sonic clearly dwarf the numbers of the aforementioned IPs, it is also worth noting that these other titles were also relatively niche titles until recently, especially with the advent of Persona 5 Royal on multiple platforms and Yakuza: Like a Dragon.

Among these sales reports are also the details of SEGA’s medium and long-term targets/plans. These strategies include trying to move away from platform exclusivity and aiming for wider audiences with “multiplatform deployment of content” as well as continuing to remake and remaster existing games. Curiously, the publisher aims for the creation of a “Super Game” by Q3 FY2026 (October-December 2026), whatever that means.
