For all the big budget blockbuster action and chaos promised by the Borderlands film, it hasn’t quite grabbed the masses. Raking in a paltry $21.2 USD million worldwide against a production budget of $110–120 million, it has pretty much nailed the criteria of being a box-office bomb.
So it seems that the theatre run for the film is to be a short one, with the property shuffling its way onto streaming in record time. After blasting its way into cinemas all the way back on August 8, you can now expect to see Borderlands in your homes on…August 30.
Eesh.

With a a Metacritic rating of 27/100, it’s not even a case of the film being deeply misunderstood – instead it is clear that there are issues that aren’t easily overcome by the common viewer. So perhaps moving it to the home theatre will see a little more traction, if only to get those morbidly curious folk onto the trail of maybe seeing “what is all the fuss about” without spending a penny at the concession stand.
There is even a taste of damage control coming from sources closer to the actual game series, seeing as professional flim-flammer and Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford was quick to cryptically drop that a new game is coming “sooner rather than later“.
So whatever your poison, you can expect more Borderlands within your home soon – whether it be the film on streaming, or a new game eventually coming to your PC or Console of choice.
