After stunning people with a proper slam-dunk of a Bowser portrayal in the massive Super Mario Bros Movie last year, Jack Black looks set to add another iconic gaming portrayal to his credentials.
Via DEADLINE, word is out that the Actor/Comedian/Musician/All-Round-Top-Bloke will be lending a voice to the mostly voiceless ‘Steve’ from the blocky landscape of Minecraft.
EXCLUSIVE: Production is about to be underway on Warner Bros/Vertigo/Legendary’s feature take of Mojang/Microsoft’s ‘Minecraft’ in New Zealand, and sources are telling us that Jack Black is joining the cast of the Jason Momoa led movie https://t.co/eKUVCfW2f9

This information joins some other confirmed details, such as Jason Momoa’s involvement in the film – and the odd truth that the film has been in various states of production since 2014. The actual release of the movie is apparently 2025, with Jared Hess directing. A synopsis has been floating around the web for a while, but the discussion regarding it’s accuracy is deep and varied so we’d recommend waiting for something with some substance to get shared.
The role of Steve adds another feather to the cap of Jack Black’s video game character roles – because don’t forget, he has also lent his pipes to the cuboid robot Clap-trap in the (somewhat doomed) Borderlands movie. Yeah, the one that seems to be in post-production purgatory. Apparently it comes out in August of this year, so keep your calendar open for that one.
The real question is how Jack might voice a mostly-voiceless protagonist. Steve’s most iconic quote is simply an “Oof” when takes damage, so there is a pretty wide gulf of characterisation for Jack Black to fill.
More importantly: Will we get another banger song like Peaches for the Minecraft film. Maybe a duet with Jason Mamoa? That’d be the ticket.
