With just a couple short weeks before CI Games unleashes a new Souls-like odyssey upon us, they have been kind enough to induct players with an official overview trailer for Lords of the Fallen.
For those who may be unaware of this sequel to the 2014 original of the same name, this title will be set 1000 years later and will be another of 2023’s delicious few games to showcase the gorgeous new Unreal 5 engine. What makes this hot new overview trailer worth a look for prospective players is the narrated focus on worldbuilding, intrigue, and for those veterans of the genre, mechanics.
From snowy forests to burning cities, the narrator walks us through various corners of this world and what makes them functionally and thematically distinct beyond being a visual backdrop. We see the infamous lanterns that players can equip to glimpse and interact with a shadow realm that overlays the game world, the formidable realm of the dead, Umbral. The narrator emphasises that the overlaid Umbral realm is even more inhospitable than the corporal world of Axiom.
For those who don’t mind a few potential boss spoilers, we’re also teased with footage of several armour-clad and grotesque fiends of the body horror variety that will function as the major champions and foes of the five corners of this interconnected world.
It probably goes without saying at this point, but the trailer also is filled with brief snippets of duels interwoven with in-game cutscenes that look so gorgeous as to be indecipherable from one another. Not for nothing, Lords Of The Fallen boasts “current-gen” visuals on a scale few Souls-like games have seen this generation.
Suppose you’re here to get a solid run-down on the gameplay that awaits. In that case, the narrator also does a great job of briefly talking us through the different classes, magic types, multiplayer functionality, and more.
