Technically announced all the way back in 2014, the project has had a revolving door of talent and resources attached to it. Ultimately a director was found in Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre) and a smattering of possible details were mentioned in a long deleted Minecraft.net blog:
…the story of a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers. After the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, they must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld.
Of course, this micro synopsis also came at a time when Peter Sollett (Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist) was attached to direct – so take it with a grain of dated salt.
Given the oddly chill nature of the game itself, it’s hard to imagine what audiences may be in for – unless the film aims to lean closer to the more action-oriented incarnations of the block builder.
With the Super Mario Bros Movie currently live in cinemas, and Sonic the Hedgehog sitting pretty with two films under his hedgehog belt – we are edging ever closer to the Super Smash Bros cinematic universe.
Just need a Kirby film, starring Vin Diesel to get announced and all the pieces will start falling together.
