Happy New Year WellPlayed readers, I hope you all had an enjoyable and safe holiday. Now that we are in this new and shiny year, we need to talk about the first batch of PlayStation Plus titles on offer. December’s Christmasy goodies were Rocket Arena, Just Cause and the addictive Worms Rumble which made for an interesting mix, but what do we have to look forward to for January?
Well, fear not, as the PlayStation Blog has outlined the line-up for the first month of 2021 and it’s looking pretty schmick. The January PS Plus games include the PS5 version (no PS4 version) of the open-world action game Maneater, the latest expedition for Lara Croft in Shadow of the Tomb Raider and the unique RPG Greedfall. These titles will be available to download from tomorrow (January 5).
Sometimes you just want a game that doesn’t take itself too seriously, a game that lets you unwind and cause some chaos, a game that is inherently silly and fun. Maneater more than fits this category, as it puts you in the gills of a big old shark that wants nothing more than to chow down of some beachgoers. It may not be the most refined experience (we gave it a 5 due mostly to technical issues at launch), but it will certainly do the trick if you want to relax after a long day at work. Just remember, this is strictly the PS5 version only.
What a welcome reintroduction the 2013 Tomb Raider game was. Bringing Lara Croft into the new age of gaming with such success warranted a sequel or two for sure. Well, that’s exactly what we got, first with Rise of the Tomb Raider and in 2018 the trilogy was complete with this month’s PS Plus game, Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Though it doesn’t blow the roof off like the others may have done, it’s still a great action-adventure game that’s worth getting around if you haven’t already (we gave it a 7).
If the PS Plus titles are to last us all month then we’ll need a chunky RPG to keep us busy. French developer Spiders has us covered in January with their Age of Discovery-inspired RPG Greedfall. Mixing together magic, exploration, team building and satisfying combat, this 60-hour monster should tick a lot of boxes for fans of fantasy RPGs. It may not be a perfectly polished AAA blockbuster, but that isn’t a detractor here at all.
If you haven’t downloaded December’s free games yet, be sure to do so before the end of today (January 4).
Which of January’s games are you most excited to play? Did you download December’s line-up? Let us know.
