Spiderweb Software has announced its plans to remaster the cult-classic RPG Geneforge 2: Infestation via a Kickstarter campaign beginning on February 8th. Originally released twenty years ago, the remaster is being helmed by series creator Jeff Vogel and is seeking USD $30,000 (just over 40k in down under dollars). Along with some stretch goals, the Kickstarter will fund a fairly substantial overhaul of the original game, including new combat systems, storylines and, of course, graphical upgrades.
This isn’t the first time Spiderweb Software and Vogel have turned to Kickstarter to revitalise the Geneforge series. Geneforge 1: Mutagen remaster sprinted past its initial goal by an additional 50k USD and now the sequel is looking to offer fans even more input into the game’s creative process. Stretch goals include ways backers can influence in-game content, like helping create companion characters and even steering thematic and plot elements.
The Geneforge franchise spans five entries between 2001 and 2008. The series has received critical acclaim and generally positive fan reactions across its run, being praised for its deep, player-driven customisation and eccentric fantasy world. One part pretentious academic and one part goofy dickhead, James is often found defending strange games and frowning at the popular ones, but he's happy to play just about everything in between. An unbridled love for FromSoftware's pantheon, a keen eye for vibes first experiences, and an insistence on the Oxford comma have marked his time in the industry.
