Whether you love it, hate it or you’re indifferent, the juggernaut battle royale that is Fortnite is still going strong, with a huge player base and constant updates bringing new content to the game. With multiple crossovers with the likes of Marvel, DC, Star Wars and John Wick, live, in-game concerts from Marshmello and Travis Scott and, of course, an ever-evolving battle royale mode. With Fortnite being so popular, it’s only natural that it would make its way to next-gen consoles, but it won’t be a simple port, instead, it will be a fresh, new version that takes advantage of the new hardware.
Thanks to a breakdown on the Fortnite website, we now know exactly what these new versions will include. The game will continue to be free-to-play and will be available for download on Xbox Series X/S and PS5 on launch on November 10 and November 12 respectively. Here are all of the new additions coming to the next-gen consoles:
Xbox Series X/S:
- 4K resolution, running at 60fps on Xbox Series X
- 1080p resolution, running at 60fps on Xbox Series S
- Advanced physics and visuals (grass will react to explosions, enhanced smoke and water effects etc)
- Reduced loading times and quicker match-making
- Split-screen supports 60fps
PlayStation 5
- 4K resolution, running at 60fps
- Advanced physics and visuals (grass will react to explosions, enhanced smoke and water effects etc)
- Reduced loading times and quicker match-making
- Split-screen supports 60fps
- DualSense support including haptic feedback for triggers
- PlayStation Activities support. Allowing you to select your favourite mode (duos, trios or squads) and launch into it from the home screen
If you’re a returning player, you’ll be able to pick up where you left off on whatever console you were playing on previously by logging in to your Epic Account once you’ve completed the download. To celebrate the next-gen launch, players will be gifted a free in-game item. Available between November 4-January 15, 2021, The Throwback Axe is the original pickaxe that made its debut all the way back at Fortnite’s release, so it’s a clever little nod to the game’s past.
