Everything Announced At The May 2023 PlayStation Showcase

A solid showing

We haven’t had a proper PlayStation Showcase since September 2021, and that event gave us Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Marvel’s Wolverine and our first proper look at God of War: Ragnarok. So, to say that the excitement is at an all-time high for this morning’s showcase would be an understatement. Without getting too tin-foil hat, there are some games that we will almost certainly see, some that are kind of likely and others that are more of a pipe dream.

So, without any further delay, let’s look at all of the announcements from the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase:

Fairgame$

The Showcase opened with a very fun cinematic trailer for the Haven Studio’s mysterious new game titled Fairgame$. It’s safe to say that this one is a shooter with a focus on high-octane heists, but we know very little other than that. The PlayStation Blog refers to it as a competitive heist experience, so we could be looking at a competitive Payday situation, which sounds fantastic.

Helldivers II

Now this is what I’m talking about. Opening with a dorky cinematic before flipping over to some alien-blasting gameplay, we got the announcement for Helldivers II, a follow-up to the excellent 2015 co-op top-down shooter. The gameplay is switching to a third-person perspective, which is curious, but any additional Helldivers is good by me. Coming to PS5 and PC in 2023.

Immortals Of Aveum

This game looks rad. We got another action-packed trailer for this first-person magical shooter, and it still looks the goods. Lots of colourful carnage and lots of dramatic dialogue.

Ghostrunner II

Another cheeky surprise up next, with a kick-arse trailer featuring a cyberpunk ninja driving a futuristic motorbike down the side of a building. A sequel to the fast and challenging action platformer, this trailer promises that the stakes have been raised and that the blood will flow. Coming in 2023.

Phantom Blade Zero

Drama, Drama, drama. This new action RPG is set in a fantasy world that blends Chinese myth with steampunk aesthetics. Brutal combat mixed with interesting character design has me intrigued.

Sword of the Sea

Gorgeous visuals and a cool vibe; I’m in. A mysterious character surfing sand dunes on a sword; I’m in. the newest game from the team that brought us Journey and The Pathless; I’M IN. This awesome reveal trailer shows the player character riding their Hoversword across beautiful sand dunes, and I’m very excited to see more.

Talos Principle II

The sequel to the well-received puzzle game original, this trailer promises more of what made the first game great. Mixing together a plot filled with philosophical questions and head-scratching puzzles, this will be one to watch.

Neva

Coming from the developers of Gris, Neva looks to be just as beautiful, showing off an incredible art style in this short cinematic trailer. The team’s last game was a winner, so expectations are high.

Cat Quest: Pirates of the Purribean

I’ve never played a Cat Quest game, but damn do I think they’re cute. This time around, the action RPG series is going in a swashbuckling direction with a pirate theme. Coming to PS5 and PS4 in 2024.

Foamstars

Anime characters shooting bubbles at each other and then surfing on them? Ok. This one looks similar in many ways to Splatoon but with 100% fewer squids. It’s a new third-person shooter that could very well be a lot of fun, we’ll keep an eye on it.

The Plucky Squire

This game is cute as hell. An action platformer with an adorable aesthetic, The Plucky Squire is unique in that it switches from 2D to 3D and back, creating some fun gameplay possibilities. Coming to PS5 in 2023.

Teardown

Ahhh, there’s nothing quite like blowing things up and razing buildings to the ground. Teardown has you doing exactly that. Giving you all the tools needed for destruction, you’re tasked with breaking in (literally) and stealing an item before absconding with it in any way possible. Currently on PC, this pixelated playground is coming to PS5 in 2023.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater

Well, they’ve finally gone and done it. A trailer started out showing various animals killing each other along, as we went up the food chain from bird to snake to alligator, the camera finally landed on a very familiar Snake of the human variety. Naked Snake is back, looking better than ever. Moreover, a Master Collection of the first three MGS games is also hitting PS5.

Towers of Aghasba

Touted as an action-adventure builder, this game looks strange in a good way. The masked protagonist is seen exploring an alien world, fighting beasties and building bases, so you can’t say there’s a lack of variety. This one is coming in 2024.

Final Fantasy XVI

I’m already sold on FFXVI, but another blood-pumping trailer filled with action, crystals, and Clive doesn’t hurt. Final Fantasy XVI is just around the corner, launching on PS5 and PC on June 22.

Alan Wake 2

We haven’t heard from MR Wake in a while, so we’re about due for a new look. This very spooky trailer showed off a few snippets of gameplay from the perspective of the titular writer and what looks to be a new playable character. Best of all, we now have a release date of October 17.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage

By far our best look at the upcoming back-to-basics Assassin’s Creed game yet, this trailer definitely felt like the AC games of old, with lots of sneaking, parkour and sword-clashing. More good release date news, this one is coming on October 12.

Revenant Hill

Little was revealed about this mysterious little game, but I’m on board all the same. Set in the year 1920, we’re told that Twigs the Cat has a dream of farming and a simple life. The visuals are cool, and I’m here for the vibe, so I’m keen to see more.

We got another look at Cygame’s newest action RPG, with heaps of colourful combat on show. No release date as of yet, but the game continues to look solid.

Street Fighter 6

Good lord, this game’s story mode looks odd. But, as far as the fighting itself is concerned, Street Fighter 6 is looking top-notch. New and returning characters are coming together for this wicked-looking entry into the long-running fighting series that’s hitting shelves on June 2.

Ultros

A super colourful side-scrolling action platformer with some pretty psychedelic visuals, Ultros has my attention. This is the newest venture for El Huervo, the artist behind Hotline Miami, so it’s bound to look incredible. Coming to PS5 and PS4 in 2024.

Tower of Fantasy

Anime action is back again for the second time during the showcase. This time we have Tower of Fantasy, the open-world multiplayer RPG that features everything from fantasy trimmings and underwater worlds to cyberpunk cities. This one is coming in 2023.

Dragon’s Dogma II

Honestly, I forgot that this game had been announced. Hell, yeah. Gryphons, dragons, gorgons and lots of open-world action were shown off, and it all looks amazing. The Arisen are back in action, with more monster-battling action and giant dragon slaying. Now release date, but this was a nice little surprise all the same.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted 2

This one does what it says on the tin. The third-person leap into the FNAF world is getting another go around. Little more was shared, but fans of the series will likely be excited to jump back in. Mind the jump scare at the end of the trailer.

Resident Evil 4 Remake VR

I’m currently playing through the Resident Evil 4 Remake, so this is very exciting. We got our first look at the game’s PSVR2 mode, which looks absolutely brilliant. Playing Village in VR is a blast, so getting under that iconic fringe will be even better.

Arizona Sunshine 2

After deviating from the series with After the Fall, Vertigo Games are coming back to Arizona Sunshine with a direct sequel. The reveal trailer shows off plenty of zombie-killing action and humour. Coming to PSVR2 in 2023.

Crossfire: Sierra Squad

After a long wait, we have more gameplay from Crossfire: Sierra Squad. The tactical VR gameplay looks sweet, but a release date was nowhere to be found.

Synapse

This game continues to look rad. Mixing fast gunplay with telekinetic abilities in a largely black-and-white world, we learn in this trailer that it’s all set within the mind of the game’s villain. Sweet. More good news arrived with the announcement of the game’s July 4 release date.

Beat Saber

You know what it is, and if you own a PSVR2, you’ve been waiting for it. Get sweaty and have a musically good time with Beat Saber on PSVR2 RIGHT NOW. Oh, and the game hits PSVR2 alongside a new QWueen pack with 11 of the iconic band’s songs. Sweet.

Marathon

So this is a BIG deal. While this is only a cinematic trailer, it’s exciting that Bungie is working on something that isn’t Destiny (no offence to Destiny players). Revisiting a series that has laid dormant since 1994, Marathon will be a PvP extraction shooter set in a sci-fi world. Watch this space.

Destiny 2: The Final Shape

Marking the final chapter in the Light & Darkness Saga, Destiny 2‘s next expansion is titled The Final Shape and will seemingly see the return of Cayde-6. Very little was revealed, but more will be shown off during the Destiny Showcase on August 22.

Concord

There’s very little to base any opinion on here, but the trailer was very stylish with its futuristic setting. Concord is the new PvP multiplier FPS from Firewalk, a recently acquire PlayStation studio. It’s likely that we’ll hear more from Concord soon, but for now, we know that it’s coming to PS5 and PC in 2024.

Gran Turismo Film

I’m not a car person, nor am I a GT fan, but I’m sure there are plenty of folks excited for this film. We got another brief trailer for the Gran Turismo movie that hits cinemas on August 11.

PlayStation Handheld and Earbuds

An unexpected detour into hardware now, with the announcement of Project Q. This is a handheld device that will let players stream games from their PS5 over wi-fi. It features an eight-inch screen and all of the creature comforts of the DualSense controller.

Additionally, a set of PlayStation earbuds were announced. These little dudes can connect to devices through Bluetooth and match the look of the PS5 console itself.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Kraven. The. Hunter. Let’s go. We all knew it was his voice in the initial Spider-Man 2 trailer, but getting to see him in all of his glory is excellent. That’s not the only surprise this trailer has to offer, though, as Spidey is rocking the symbiote suit and is using it and its new abilities to lay waste to Krave’s goons. We also see the game’s mechanic that will allow you to switch between Peter Parker and Miles Morales (who can use a wingsuit now).

The game looks amazing, but there’s still no solid release date, which is a real bummer.

Well, that showcase was absolutely packed. I’d wager that there’s something for just about everyone here, with some big players like MGS and Spider-Man giving it some real heft.
