Avatar: The Last Airbender Is Getting An Action-RPG Video Game Adaptation

Yip yip

Paramount Game Studios has announced that a AAA action-RPG adaptation of the hit animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender is in the works.

As reported by IGN, Paramount Games Studios and Saber Interactive are in the early stages of development on “the biggest video game” in Avatar franchise history. While it was confirmed to be in development for PC and consoles, we only know a few other details at this stage.

Firstly, the game will be set hundreds of years before the events of the original series, focusing on an “all-new, never-before-seen Avatar” that will learn to bend all four elements and engage in combat alongside companions. Working with Avatar Studios, the game’s story will “feature elements both new and familiar to fans of the franchise.” The beloved original series and its well-received follow-up, Legend of Korra, have both had video game adaptations in the past. Still, their collective quality has left a lot to be desired, so hopes, even at this early stage, are high that Paramount and Saber can deliver on the huge potential that an Avatar game holds.

In a statement to IGN, Doug Rosen, senior vice president of Games and Emerging Media at Paramount, said, “We know loyal fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender have been eager for more stories that bring them into the universe of the show, and through gaming, we’re able to expand the world-building and allow fans to experience the new content in a completely immersive way. Saber Interactive has a proven track record in bringing IP-based games to life, and we are excited to co-fund this AAA title alongside them and let fans experience this world first-hand.”
