The PS5 Pro Has Been Revealed And It’s Powerful, Expensive And Releasing This Year

Ouch, my wallet

Sony has officially revealed the PS5 Pro, a premium mid-generation iteration of the current PlayStation console that will be released on November 7. The console will retail for $1199.95, and pre-orders will go live on September 26.

Following constant leaks and rumours, Sony finally revealed its newest console this morning with a nine-minute Technical Presentation. Mark Cerny, the Lead Architect on the PS5, delivered the details on what is a more powerful version of the current hardware.

Cerny referred to the console’s enhancements as “the big three,” which include an upgraded GPU, improved ray tracing and AI-driven upscaling.

  • Upgraded GPU: With PS5 Pro, we are upgrading to a GPU that has 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. Overall, this enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making the experience much smoother.
  • Advanced Ray Tracing: We’ve added even more powerful ray tracing that provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. This allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console.
  • AI-Driven Upscaling: We’re also introducing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.

Wading through the jargon, the console’s main selling point is that it will remove the need to choose between fidelity and performance modes when playing games, or, at the very least, it will close the gap significantly. The accompanying PlayStation Blog post goes into further detail on the Pro’s finer details, such as it being a digital console (while being compatible with the separately sold disc drive), shipping with an internal 2TB SSD, and having support for Wi-Fi 7.

Additionally, 8,500 PS5 and PS4 games will benefit from PS5 Pro Game Boost, which aims to stabilise performance and sharpen visual quality.
