Original PSX Cheat Codes Still Work in Spyro Reignited Trilogy

Extra lives! Bigger heads! More purple!

There’s no denying that Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a wonderful, nostalgic treat for those that still hold fond memories of the original PSX trilogy. Something I’ve learned since penning my review of the HD remakes earlier this week is that the reverence for these classics from developer Toys for Bob runs deeper than I even knew.

The internet has recently discovered that certain cheat codes (remember those?) from the original games entered in at the pause menu actually work in the new Reignited versions. Not all of them, mind, as some of the original codes involve pressing the ‘circle’ button on the PSX controller, which in the modern controller mappings equates to the ‘back’ button and exits the pause screen. The ones that do work seem to be a mix of codes from both Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage and Spyro: Year of the Dragon, but they’ll function in any of the three remastered games.

I’ve put together a quick list of the ones I’ve tested that work, but feel free to seek out lists of the codes from back in the day and try some more to see if they’ll take!

Flat Spyro:
Left, Right, Left, Right, L2, R2, L2, R2, Square
Big Head Mode:
Up, Up, Up, Up, R1, R1, R1, R1, Circle
99 Lives:
R2, L2, R2, L2, Up, Up, Up, Up, Circle
Black Spyro:
Up, Left, Down, Right, Up, Square, R1, R2, L1, L2, Up, Right, Down, Left, Up, Down
Blue Spyro:
Up, Left, Down, Right, Up, Square, R1, R2, L1, L2, Up, Right, Down, Left, Up, X
Green Spyro:
Up, Left, Down, Right, Up, Square, R1, R2, L1, L2, Up, Right, Down, Left, Up, Triangle
Pink Spyro:
Up, Left, Down, Right, Up, Square, R1, R2, L1, L2, Up, Right, Down, Left, Up, Square
Purple Spyro:
Up, Left, Down, Right, Up, Square, R1, R2, L1, L2, Up, Right, Down, Left, Up, Right
Red Spyro:
Up, Left, Down, Right, Up, Square, R1, R2, L1, L2, Up, Right, Down, Left, Up, Circle
Yellow Spyro:
Up, Left, Down, Right, Up, Square, R1, R2, L1, L2, Up, Right, Down, Left, Up, Up

Then you’ll get abominations like this:

Unfortunately some of the cooler cheat codes like the squid skateboard and the various secret Crash Bandicoot demos aren’t available, but this is still a pretty cool nod to the original games.
